Private Clubs Designed by C.B. Macdonald

1892–1928

Charles Blair Macdonald is the father of American golf course architecture. A student of the great Scottish links, Macdonald transplanted the strategic principles of St Andrews, North Berwick, and Prestwick to American soil — creating template holes inspired by the classics that he believed represented the ideal challenges in golf. His National Golf Links of America (1911) is widely considered the first great American course and sparked a golden age of design. Macdonald's work established the vocabulary — Redan, Alps, Eden, Road — that defines strategic architecture to this day.
