About Thunderbird Country Club
Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California holds a landmark place in desert golf history as the first 18-hole course in the Coachella Valley, founded in 1951 by developer Johnny Dawson and entertainer Desi Arnaz. Designed by Lawrence Hughes and later renovated by Ted Robinson Jr., the par-72 layout helped establish the blueprint for the residential golf community concept that would come to define the region. The club also hosted early PGA Tour events in the 1950s and 1960s and is credited with inspiring the name of the iconic Ford Thunderbird automobile.
